Steering made efficient with Volvo tie rod ends

by EVANDER KLUM

Being in control of a car is very important in driving. One must be able to turn just at the right moment without the slightest trouble. This is why automaker Volvo insists on the production of quality steering components to give motorists the kind of control and steering they need. One important element in a car's steering system are the Volvo tie rod ends. The Volvo tie rod end is a flexible coupling in the steering linkage. It hooks up the tie rods with the steering knuckles. The tie rods, in turn, are connected to the center link, reaching to the steering knuckle on cars designed with conventional suspension systems and re-circulating ball steering gears. On the other hand, cars equipped with MacPherson strut suspension and rack-and pinion steering gears have tie rods that are connected to the end of the rack up to the steering knuckle.

The tie rod is basically responsible for transmitting force from the steering center link or the rack gear and straight to the steering knuckle. This causes the wheels to turn. On the other hand, the outer Volvo tie rod ends connect with an adjusting sleeve, an element in the set-up that allows tie rod lengths to be adjustable. Adjustments, of course, are called for in order to set a vehicles toe or a critical alignment angle. So as to achieve effective steering control, motorists should regularly check all steering components, particularly the Volvo tie rod ends. Some tie rod ends require periodic greasing twice a year or after every 6,000 miles of mileage, while others differ.

If maintenance check-ups are neglected, motorists may end up with loose or worn tie rods. Such misfortunes may result to wandering, haphazard steering as well as excessive wear on tires. Worn tie rod ends can be detected by raising the suspension and rocking the front wheel back and forth. Free play likely indicates the fact that ones tie rods are already in a bad way and securing replacements have to be done right away. When replacing tie rods, a wheel alignment is also required because replacing tie rods often disturb the toe setting. It is also recommended to seek out a professional mechanic for help in solving serious steering problems.
