How to Select the Best Truck Driving Schools and Jobs

by TIM MCCARTHY

Finding a job in today's economy isn't always easy. In many industries there is a serious shortage of available jobs. Fortunately for those who love the open road, a job shortage isn't found in the trucking industry. One of the primary reasons I got a truck driving job was due to the demand for new truckers. Since I recently went through the job searching process myself, I thought I'd write a little tutorial on how best to find a truck driving school or job.

1)See how the companies are viewed by truckers. I spent a few weeks reading up on opinions about different truck driving companies. If you look on the web, there are a number of forums and resources with third party opinions. Be careful with these though. I found that there are a lot of jaded and opinionated people that love to bash trucking companies unfairly. I'd look for general trends, but don't discredit one company because of a few negative comments.

2)See how the companies are viewed by industry experts. Truckers live with their companies daily, but industry experts can provide valuable outside perspectives. There are a number of resources, like the Compare Truck Driving Schools website, that objectively review businesses side by side.

3)Compare the benefits. Truck driving schools and companies offer different kinds of benefits. The company that you choose should reflect the benefits that make the most sense to you.

4)Talk to recruiters. Yes, the recruiters will try to get you to commit, but good ones have a lot of experience in the industry and could help you with many questions.

Hopefully these steps will help you find a truck driving school or job that suits your needs. I've been trucking for about a year and a half and it beats tedious desk job a hundred times over. Best of luck!
