What Keeps the Car Going

by EVANDER KLUM

Speed is a key element of driving, though it is not just all about stepping on the gas pedal. It is important to know a crucial operation that goes along with acceleration -- the transmission. Aside from the fuel economy of a manual tranny and the driving comfort brought by an automatic gearbox, people have limited knowledge about vehicle transmission. Basically, a car transmission serves as a shifter of different speed-power ratios known as "gears" or "speeds." Most applications require multiple gear ratios. Transmission eases the starting and stopping of a mechanical system, aside from maintaining good fuel economy, through proper-timing gear shifts.

Volvo features one of the better transmissions in the industry. A Volvo Transmission normally works for Volvo engines that typically run between 600 to about 7000 rpm, while the wheels rotate between 0 rpm and around 2500 rpm. It converts the engines mechanical power to electricity, using electric generators, and back with electric motors. In the case of Volvos, electrical or electronic adjustable-speed drive control systems are used to control the speed and torque of the motors. A Volvo Transmission transforms the engine's output to supply high torque at low speeds. The result is smoother acceleration. A typical Volvo gearbox, in a way, controls engine revs, resulting to controlled engine power output. And with the advent of variable intake systems and transmissions, the engine is able to discern proper change of gear to assure efficient shifting and fuel economy.

A transmission is a singular important component of any car, including Volvo. It is not surprising why carmakers make sure that their transmission systems are durable and highly efficient. More so, it is imperative for a car owner to maintain his gearbox very well. After all, even a skillful foot on the gas pedal is deemed nothing without a steady transmission aid.
