Picking out your car and keeping it in check

by SHAWN PERRY

First of all you will need to buy a car. That in itself is a whole individual topic to write about. You should ask yourself, What kind of vehicle would best suit my type of life style? If you are single you probable wont need, or want a van. If your not planning on undertaking some off roading, or have a job that dose not require you to transfer equipment of sorts, you most likely will not need a truck (unless of course you like to spend extra money on gas for no reason). If you have a family , and you don't want to buy that dreaded family van, then go for a SUV. Also if you have some distance to cover ether to work and back or if your jobs requires you to travel a lot then consider a vehicle that is gas friendly. You should also ask yourself, what kind of extras do I want? Heated seats? Leather interior? Or how about that extra feature that sets your ride apart form others. These are just a few common sense questions you should consider before you go out and purchase a car.

Now that you have purchased the right car for yourself, it is time to make sure you keep this considerable investment in tip top shape. If you start regular maintenance early, you can prevent possible problems and or mishaps in the near future. Doing this regular maintenance will keep you ready to tackle other problems down the road(literally), and boost your confidence in your ability to take on things you otherwise would not. For instance, checking your tires for foreign objects, gouges, making sure they are inflated evenly and to the right psi, and of course make sure they are not completely bald, will prevent future flats or blowouts. As you know there are a number of different kinds of fluids that are essential for certain operations of your automobile. Keeping a eye on these levels, and making sure they are not below the add mark or don't need to be completely renewed(like Engine oil and trans fluid) will greatly increase the longevity of your vehicle by months if not years of extra service. Making sure that all of your lights work (front and rear) will greatly reduce the possibility of getting in an accident and maybe even getting unwanted tickets. As you can see keeping up with simple regular maintenance will save you time, money, heartache, and of course increase your knowledge and confidence in automobiles.

In the last paragraph I talked about doing everyday maintenance on your automobile to prevent future problems, but what if you overlooked something as simple as the condition that your battery is in. Things like this happen all of the time. Most likely you will notice that your battery is failing before it dies completely (i.e. the vehicle will have a hard time starting). But what if it goes unnoticed and the next thing you know you find yourself stranded. Well if you keep a spare battery or jumper cables in your car your in luck, if not then you are going to have to rely on someone else to get you out of there. Even worse, you could blow a tire and find yourself without a spare, or you might have a spare, but don't have the tools to change the flat. There are just so many negative outcomes of not having some tools that will alow you to get out of situations like these. Just by having some of these tools you will be able to dodge most if not all of these outcomes.
