Why You Might Want To Consider A Cosigner For A Loan

by CHRIS GEORGE

If you have bad-credit, you may want to consider finding a co-signer to apply for the auto loan with you. Anyone can co-sign for you but in most cases, people choose either a parent or a spouse. Regardless, the person whom you choose to co-sign with you MUST have good credit. This will increase your chances of securing your auto loan.

The co-signer will sign the credit application for your auto loan. By doing so, they are agreeing that if, for whatever reason, you are unable to make payments, they will be responsible for payment of the loan on the vehicle.

It's important for you to realize that if you do not make your payments, you will be jeopardizing your credit as well as the co-signers. Failure to make payments can also result in car repossession. When seeking a co-signer, be very understanding of the responsibility that you are asking them to fulfill. Some may not be willing to take such a risk and may not accept your request; this is quite normal.

When applying with a co-signer, both your name and his/her name will be listed on the auto loan. This means that the loan is in the names of two parties. Having a co-signer can be risky to some. At first, it might be difficult to find someone who can trust you to fulfill the loan commitment. However, it does not have to be a risky situation if you are absolutely serious about establishing or rebuilding your credit.

It is important to remember that with co-signed loans, also comes warnings. There are some dealers that may lie to you and say that you are getting a co-signed loan, while tricking the co-signer into signing the wrong loan papers. As a result, the auto loan ends up in the co-signers name only. This scam is often pulled when dealers know that people with bad-credit would not get approved. When applying for an auto loan with a co-signer, the law requires both parties to be present and sign at the same time. You and the co-signer need to be attentive during the entire process and make sure that the correct names go on the correct lines of the application. Make sure that you are identified as the borrower and the co-signer is identified as the co-signer.
