Increasing Gas Mileage; The Easy Way
by JIM ATILSON
The ever increasing gasoline prices have become one of the most important issues on the planet nowadays. At almost $4.00 a gallon consumers are being forced to find alternative methods and ideas to save money on gas consumption. Many different ideas have been put forth, varying from alternative fuels and hybrid cars to use of water in conjunction with gasoline. However, as some of the products can really be helpful in your quest for increasing gas mileage, the majority of them have very little or nothing to offer.
Before getting all excited and start spending money on each and every gas saving product on the market today, your number one priority should be to gain as much information on the subject as possible. Doing so would give you greater insight, while enabling you to make wise desions regarding the gas saving products without getting caught up in all the generated hype.
There are some very basic ideas and techniques, when applied will immediately help you start saving money on gas. Keep in mind that these ideas are very simple, easy to apply, yet effective.
1)Changing The Way You Drive; Generally speaking, the faster you drive, the lower your gasoline mileage is. Therefore, trying to maintain a moderate speed, especially on the freeway, and obeying the speed limits, you will eventually be saving money on gas.
2)Avoiding Quick Starts and Stops; Accelerating quickly, and breaking hard will have a negative effect on your gas mileage. The harder your engine works, the more gas it will need to function.
3)Idling; Keeping the engine idle for more than necessary will result in higher gas consumption. Contrary to the popular belief, you do not spend more gas during start-ups. Think about it, if the engine is turned off, it does not spend ant fuel.
4)Maintenance of Your Car; A well maintained and a well tuned up car does not need the extra amount of fuel to function. Periodically changing the spark plugs, oil, and maintaining the fuel systems will in the long run save extra money on gas, while extending the life span of your engine.
5)Commute Times; Although this idea may not be an easy one for the majority of us to get used to, it will prevent you getting stuck at the rush hour traffic. If you can, try leaving a little early in the morning, and try avoiding the afternoon traffic by leaving a little late. As a result, you will then prevent yourself from the unnecessary stop and go, saving yourself the extra amount of gas.
6)Public Transportation; In my opinion, one of the best ideas would be taking advantage of the public transportation system. Even by taking the bus 2-3 times a week will save you considerable amount of money on gas, while keeping the wear and tear on your vehicle to a minimum.
7)Planning Ahead; This one might seem a bit challenging, but once you get used to consolidating and planning ahead your day, you will then start driving less and less for errands, which will result in less fuel consumption.
By collectively applying these simple ideas and techniques to your daily routine, you will immediately begin seeing improved returns on your gas mileage. Remember, as the oil reserves around the world are diminishing and the gas prices are increasing, it is up to the consumers to come up with creative, ethical, and sound ways to cope with the existing problem(s).
