When do I install a larger fuse?

by KHALID MUSTAFFA

I normally start by introducing, and eventually get into the solution, or resolution. To not risk misinterpretation on the behalf of any reader, I am going to start by saying Never install a larger fuse, no matter what happens, always stick to the manufacturers choice. Trust me, no matter what make or year your car is, the manufacturer dedicated a budget for research and development, and they chose the certain voltage for a reason. The consequences of not obeying the manufactures on this one could be as bad as starting the car on fire, if not it could lead to burning every component in the cars electrical system. If we were to go down to the nuts and bolts of the fuse science, we would find out that it is basically a protection device designed to blow when the circuits amp load exceeds the harmless limit. A blown fuse will not allow electricity to pass through, preventing unsafe load to the rest of the circuit. In other words, when the current in a circuit exceeds the normal limit, the metal element in the fuse melts and opens the circuit stopping the flow of current. Now, you may still be wondering what exactly happens when the wrong amp rating fuse is installed. Well, lets for example assume that you are to install a 15 amp fuse, on a circuit that is designed for 10 amps. This is going to cause sensitive parts to fry, it would furthermore overheat wires to a point where insulation my melt too. On a concluding note, I would like to re-warn you from bypassing or eliminating fuses under any condition. If the fuse is constantly blowing, it basically means that there is a miss in the circuit, or that there may be a short in wiring. ? Copyright - 2007 Khalid R.
