The Cadillac brand was formed as Henry Ford departed along with several of his key partners from the Henry Ford Company when the company was dissolved. His financial backers, William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen, immediately asked Henry M. Leland, an engineer, to evaluate the plant and equipment before selling them. This was necessary for the liquidation of the firm's assets. However, Leland convinced them to keep on with the automobile business by using his tried and tested 1-cylinder engine. He was the first industrialist who used the Johannson Gauges to check the accuracy of his device in 1908. He also emphasized the concept of parts interchangeability. In a factory manual, he wrote that ��No special fitting of and kind is permitted.�� His persuasion prowess won them over, and on August 22, 1902, the Cadillac Automobile Company was established. The Cadillac was named after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. He was a 17th century French explorer and the founder of Detroit, Michigan in 1701. This was the beginning of Cadillac which was to be known later as one of the world's finest vehicles. Leland��s designed system even brought Cadillac the Dewar Trophy for the standardization of automobile parts, becoming the first American automobile manufacturer to receive such honor.
The Cadillac has so many contributions to the automotive industry. It was the first manufacturer to release cars with a fully enclosed cab as factory equipment in 1910 and to introduce the first production of V8 engine for the 1914 model. It also initialized the use of a designer��s skills to create a car's body instead of an engineer in 1927. Cadillac's engineers were the first ones to design a manual transmission with synchronizers for increased drivability in 1929. They were also instrumental in the early development of the automatic transmission beginning in 1932.
