Better Illumination Ahead with Headlights

by GLADY REIGN

The automotive lighting system is essential for vehicles of any size, model or brand. Like any other mechanism found inside or outside an automobile, the lighting system also has key players, featuring the headlights and tail lights.

If one would look at a vehicle, one of the things that would surely be noticed first is the headlights, which look like the eyes of the vehicle. Together with the tail lights assembly, they help provide better road illumination for the driver. Located at the front portion of the vehicle, the primary responsibility of the headlights is to help achieve optimum visibility for the road ahead especially when driving at night. As road darkness cannot be avoided, so is the change of the seasons. Some weather conditions bring the formation of fog, snow or precipitation which may cause poor road visibility. In such cases, the headlights help the driver to see through these external factors. They also offer great aid when encountering hazardous blind spots on the road, as other drivers may be warned by any approaching vehicle with the trusty headlights.

Coming in a variety of colors, shapes or sizes, the headlights are considered low-maintenance auto parts because simple lens cleaning can already suffice. Smudges, however, are not the only danger for headlights. Sharp and solid objects such as hardened mud, a fallen branch or a small rock may accidentally reach the headlights. To prevent further damage to the headlights, an aftermarket part called the headlights cover is recommended. It can provide protection to the headlights without reducing the illumination power that brings safety on the road.

The very first headlights were introduced by drivers in the latter part of the1880s. They were first powered by fuel which was either acetylene or oil. Thankfully, the first electricity-driven headlights on the Columbia Electric Car were introduced in the market nine years later. However, it was only in 1912 when the modern automotive lighting system was created. The lighting of modern vehicles was patternedafter this.
