A Wisconsin Road Trip

by CHARLIE OWEN

As alumni of the University of Wisconsin, my wife and I are both big fans of the college C especially once football season rolls around. I grew up on the west coast. My wife however, grew up in Wausau Wisconsin and her family are the most avid Badgers fans Ive ever known (myself included). So in order to enjoy some well-deserved us time (and to try our new 2008 Chevy Tahoe on the road) we set out on a road trip to spend time with family and attend a football game and the University of Wisconsin.

We embarked on the road trip from our home town of Wausau and headed towards La Crosse to visit my wifes parents and attend my mother-in-laws birthday party. I was so glad we had just purchased our dream vehicle from the local Wausau Chevy dealership. Not only is this car powerful and roomy enough to hold all our baggage, but it was such a smooth ride (or as my wife likes to say just like riding on a cloud) So thanks to our cloud it wasnt long before my wife was sound asleep and I was left to talk to myself. Luckily the Chevy Tahoe has audio and disk controls, so I didnt have to take my eyes off the road to change the radio station and keep myself somewhat entertained.

Once we got to La Crosse, everyone was glad to see us. And even my mother-in-law seemed to approve of our Tahoe. Though she usually disapproves of many of our purchasing decisions, she was pleased with our classy and grown up dark blue metallic SUV. We stayed at my in-laws for a night, had a surprisingly good time at the party and continued on down the road (but not before declining a very generous offer from my wifes father to play bingo at the local senior citizen center).

Getting closer to Madison made me feel like I was an undergrad again, though so much had changed since we attended. Luckily our Tahoe has OnStar, so from parking to our favorite local restaurants, we were able to find all the places we had once loved as college students.

After enjoying some local food and dodging some inebriated college students, we spent the day as die-hard badgers fans C dressed in red and tailgating all day. The game was even better than I remembered with that defining sound of an entire stadium filled with red-coated badger fans.

After a jam-packed weekend, we began our trip back up to Wausau. We had such a good time in our new Tahoe that were already discussing our next road trip. Now that ski season is coming up, we cant wait to pack the snow gear in the SUV and hit our favorite skiing spots this winter.
