2007 BMW X5 launched
by EVANDER KLUM
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), an independent German automobile and motorcycle manufacturer, has recently launched its X5. Almost seven years have past since the X5 was created as a unique combination of SUV functionality and BMW sportiness. They called it an SAV or Sports Activity Vehicle. Brought by its popularity, BMW stepped up the pace with a smaller version of the X5 as the X3.
The BMW X5 will be offering an all-wheel drive system named xDrive. To meet the ever-changing consumer demands, BMW now offers two X5 models: the X5 3.0si powered with a 260 horsepower DOHC, in-line six-cylinder engine; and a 4.8i with motive power derived from a DOHC, 32-valve V-8 motor that produces 350 horsepower with 350 lb.-ft. of torque. Both are mated to specific six-speed automatic gearboxes with manual shift capability.
The difference of the new X5 from its predecessors could not easily be distinguished at first glance. That is because BMW strives to maintain a traditional family resemblance, though it is considerably all new. The optional package made it longer and wider than before. It could now even seat up to seven passengers.
Among the distinct styling features are pronounced hood contours; an integrated bumper/air-intake unit; traditional wider, BMW kidneys set high; and headlamp clusters with inside luminous rings. In late 04, adaptive headlamps, which steer the headlights around corners and curves, have been added to the X5. The xDrive all-wheel drive system was also innovated through several significant options offered, though it is still considered as permanent system featuring a variable torque split with rapid reflexes in coping with changing driving conditions.
The 4.8i version of the X5 was exteriorly finished with Platinum Bronze metallic. Inside, it has a complementing Black Nevada leather interior and satin finish, body color accents on the console, doors and shift knob. The model has a base price of $54,500, including an extensive line of standard features and equipments. There are also optional features offered. The optional Cold Weather package will be comprised with heated front seats, headlight washers, heated steering wheel and ski bag. The optional Premium package will be featured with an integrated garage door opener, panoramic moonroof, auto-dimming mirrors, lumbar support, storage package, digital compass mirror, ambient lighting package and BMW Assist with Bluetooth services. The optional Sport package will be offered with sports leather steering wheel, 19-inch alloy wheels, run-flat all-season tires, Active Roll Stabilization, Electronic Camping Control, sport seats, shadow-line trim and Anthracite headliner. The optional Technology Package will include a rearview camera, park distance control navigation system, voice activation and Real Time Traffic Information and the Comfort Access System. When such optional features are included with the standard, the vehicle will be price to $66,025, which includes destination and handling fee.
The excellent structural rigidity brings forth the improved stability during spirited maneuvers, making the X5 absolutely a sports oriented vehicle that provides impressive ride quality, like those of other BMW vehicles with premium BMW 528 parts and others.
